Everyone should take a moment today to reflect on the insane things John Singer Sargent was able to do with paint to create and recreate light, you guys. Oh and also faces. Because it’s bananagrams.

The Winged Victory of Samothrace

also called the Nike of Samothrace, is a 2nd century BC marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike (Victory). Since 1884, it has been prominently displayed at the Louvre and is one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world. H.W. Janson described it as “the greatest masterpiece of Hellenistic sculpture.”

This guy has probably been the biggest influence over my school work. His name is Nathan Ford and as far as portraiture goes, he is probably one of my absolute favourites. I adore everything about the marks he uses, they way he applies paint, the colour scheme and the way none of his paintings look completed. The first time I came across him was in the National Portrait Gallery in London, where I awed for what seemed like ages, over the tiniest little painting of a child.
